Bonnie Gritton - Ph.D., N.C.T.M.

Bonnie Gritton’s musical career has been one of tremendous versatility and scope. Since her debut at the age of fifteen with the Utah Symphony, she has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Israel and China, including appearances with the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Czech Radio Orchestra, the Armenian Philharmonic, the Westminister Orchestra, the Salt Lake Symphony, and many collaborations with the Utah Symphony. She has performed on the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago and Los Angeles ( broadcast on public radio), at the International Piano Festival in Glasgow Scotland, at the International Piano Festival in Lake Konstanz, Germany, on the Friends of Music chamber series in Connecticut, at the International Conference on the Arts and Humanities in Hawaii, at the International Piano Festival in Greece, and on recitals at the Jerusalem Center, Nan Jing University, Symphony Hall in Prague, Radio Music Hall in Warsaw, Boesendorfer Hall in Vienna, Symphony Hall in Boston, the Royal Scottish Conservatory in Glasgow, Scotland, and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Her playing has received accolades from critics. Raymond Tuttle wrote in Fanfare Magazine, “I don’t know when I’ve enjoyed a performance this much.” Reviewer Phillip Dieckow described her Carnegie Hall duo recital with Susan Duehlmeier as “stunning”, “incomparable” and “brilliant”. She has released five CD’s on Centaur, MMC, and Albany labels, one of which was nominated for a Grammy. She has performed the world premier of the Wolking “Letting Midnight Out on Bail” and “Jazz Suite” and has been published in Clavier magazine.

Over the past thirty years, Dr. Gritton’s students have won hundreds of awards in state and national competitions. They have won honors in such national competitions as the Eastern Music Festival, PianoArts, Jefferson Symphony, Kingsville, Young Keyboard Artists, National Federation of Musicians, Greensborough, Missoula Symphony, National Stravinsky Awards and MTNA. They have placed in many state competitions including SummerArts, Utah State Fair, MTNA, Utah Symphony Youth Guild, Arlette Day, Joy Robin, Con Brio, and National Federation of Music Teachers. They have also performed numerous times with the Utah Symphony, Utah Philharmonia, Salt Lake Symphony, SummerArts Festival Orchestra, and with the Eastern Music Festival Orchestra under Gerard Schwarz. They have performed in the Kennedy Center, Abravanel Hall, the Jerusalem Center, Oxford University in England, the Warsaw Conservatory in Poland, the Esterhazy Palace in Hungary and the Heidelberg Castle in Germany. Dr. Gritton has contributed to curriculum development at the University of Utah, having created and implemented the piano lit and performance practice, the advanced teaching, and the career development courses. She also has developed a new class piano program in which students are self-paced and has been instrumental in taking classical programs into Title One schools in Salt Lake City, a project which was featured at the National Music Teachers Convention. She has adjudicated the Southwest division rounds of the MTNA competition in Arizona as well as the Jefferson Symphony competition in Denver. She is in demand as a speaker and gives frequent master classes.

Bonnie Gritton has been a full-time tenured faculty member at the University of Utah for many years. In 2005 she reduced her load to half time to be able to have more time for teaching and performing. She co-directs the University of Utah SummerArts Festival which offers performance opportunities, educational experiences, and a competition for pianists. Several international tours have been offered to students through this festival.

Dr. Gritton received her Masters and Ph.D.degrees from the University of Calfornia at Los Angeles. While there she studied with Aube Tzerko and was chosen to participate in the summer classes of Rosina Lhevinne at the University of Southern California. She has studied harpsichord with Igor Kipnis and Lola Odiaga. She has been the recipient of the Frank Sinatra Classical Performance Award, the Atwater Kent Award, the “Ten Best Performances of the Year” award given by the Deseret News, the 2004 Best of State Award (BOSS), and has been named the University of Utah Public Service Professor. She was recently a winner in the International Web Concert Hall Competition. She is a listed Steinway artist and is nationally certified by the National Music Teachers Association.
